EV demo and test fleets

Sweden - a perfect country for electric vehicle testing

In Sweden we have the "electric engine heaters" which are used during winter to heat the engines of parked cars. There are an estimated 600 000-800 000 outlets in connection to homes and workplaces and in car parks around the country. These could be modified to serve as charge spots for electric vehicles and thus quickly give Sweden a charging infrastructure on par with the "2020-plans" of other countries.

The Swedish infrastructure for transmission and distribution of electricity is one of the most developed and robust in the world. Distribution networks are built to each household for heating purposes, which means that each villa and apartment building has access to the power of 20 kW three-phase transmissions. The electricity mix in Sweden roughly consists of 50 % hydro power and 50 % nuclear power.

In addition to these advantages, Sweden is a country where converting to new technologies can happen vary fast. Examples are ethanol and biogas-powered cars, which have a high market share in Sweden. The introduction of these vehicles has certainly been subsidized by state and regional initiatives, but shows that there is willingness to switch to cleaner vehicles, given that political decision supports the transition.

Sweden also has strong and well-proven industry both in the automotive and energy sectors. There is therefore a great potential for creating a competitive industry in the area of electrical vehicles.

TSS EV and PHEV fleets

Together with different partners TSS is participating in testing and demonstration of small EV and PHEV fleets:

  • Testing of EVs (at the moment three EVs) and five PHEVs (converted Toyota Priuses) in Gothenburg is conducted by TSS, Göteborgs Gatu AB (municipality company), Trafikkontoret (the Traffic department in Gothenburg) and Göteborg Energi (utility company). The EVs and PHEVs are used on a daily basis by employes within the city of Gothenburg.
  • TSS and Move About have conducted a pilot project with a EV car sharing fleet (5 EVs) at Lindholmen Science Park in Gothenburg. The EV car sharing fleet is know used on a daily basis by different customers.
  • TSS has supported the project MobilEl in Stockholm were PHEVs were evaluated by Fortum (utility company) and the City of Stockholm.
